Salas hangs up his boots

Chile's all-time leading scorer Marcelo Salas has announced his retirement from football.

The 34-year-old former River Plate, Lazio and Juventus striker brought his career to an end after current club Universidad de Chile lost to Cobreloa in the Clausura quarter-finals.

The defeat also prompted the resignation of Universidad head coach Arturo Salah.

Salas, who represented Chile at the 1998 World Cup, scored 37 goals in 70 appearances for his country.

"I have already made the decision, guys," Salas told reporters in Santiago.

"My contract with Universidad de Chile ended last Sunday."

Salas suffered numerous knee injuries during his career, another factor in his decision to retire.
